About this tool
Where the rates come from
The European Central Bank publishes reference rates for thirty-plus currencies once each business day at around 16:00 Central European Time. Your browser fetches that public list directly when you open this page — the request goes to the rates service, not to AnkhKit servers, and nothing you convert ever leaves your device. No connection appears, the last loaded rates stay visible with their date.
Reference rates are not what you will pay
Banks, card networks, and exchange kiosks add their own margins on top of these rates — often 1 to 4 percent. ECB reference figures are the fair middle point: right for budgeting, invoices, and comparing quotes, wrong for expecting an exact receipt. Frequently asked questions
How often do the rates update?
Once per business day, early evening Central European Time. On weekends the page shows Friday's rates and labels them with their date, because the central bank does not publish on Saturdays or Sundays.
Why does my bank give a different number?
Banks buy and sell currency at a spread around the reference rate and add fees. The rate here is the benchmark that spreads are measured against, not the price you will be quoted.
Does the converter work offline?
The arithmetic does, but the rates need one live fetch when you open the page. Once loaded, changing amounts and currency pairs stays entirely on your device.
Which currencies are included?
The major world currencies the European Central Bank quotes — dollars, euro, sterling, yen, yuan, francs, kroner, and more, around thirty in total. Exotic and crypto pairs are not part of the official reference list.
