Average of a List of Numbers Online — Free

Runs 100% in your browser — your files never leave your device.

Grades, ratings, lap times, monthly figures — paste the numbers and get the mean, with the sum and count shown so you can sanity-check the math. Results update live as you edit the list, and everything is computed locally.

How it works

  1. 1

    Paste your numbers

Spaces, commas, semicolons, or new lines all work.

  2. 2

    Read the average

Mean, sum, and count appear as soon as the list is valid.

  3. 3

    Adjust and re-check

Edit the list any time — the results follow instantly.

About this tool

The average, computed honestly

The tool sums your numbers and divides by how many there are — the arithmetic mean, reported with full precision. No rounding until the result, no dropped values, no surprises: the average of exactly the numbers you pasted.

What the average hides

An average is one number standing for many, and outliers pull it. A single 10,000 among nine 100s produces an "average" no item matches. Check the min and max alongside, and if the extremes dominate, a median (middle value of the sorted list) tells the truer story.

Common averaging mistakes this avoids

Forgetting a value when summing by hand, dividing by the wrong count, and averaging averages (which is only correct when the groups are the same size). Paste the raw values and let the tool do the arithmetic once, correctly.

Frequently asked questions

Should I remove outliers before averaging?

Only with a reason — an outlier that is real data belongs in the mean; one that is a typo does not. Check the min and max, decide what each extreme is, then average.

Does the average handle decimals and negatives?

Yes — the sum and count treat all numeric values equally, so mixed decimals and negatives compute precisely.

What is the difference between average and median?

The average divides the sum by the count; the median is the middle value of the sorted list. Medians resist outliers — use it when a few extreme values distort the mean.
