About this tool

Where the odd numbers come from

An acre is 43,560 square feet — a medieval strip of plowed land, one furlong by one chain. A hectare is a tidy 10,000 square meters. A square foot is exactly 0.09290304 square meters because the foot is exactly 0.3048 meters and area squares that factor. The strangeness is history; the math is exact.

Square units are not length units

You cannot convert meters to square meters — one measures a line, the other a surface. The factor that trips people up: one square meter is about 10.76 square feet, not 3.28, because 3.28 squared is 10.76. For plain distances reach for the length converter.

Frequently asked questions

How many acres is a hectare?

About 2.471 acres. A handy mental shortcut: a hectare is roughly two and a half football pitches.

What is a square mile in acres?

Exactly 640 acres — the grid the US Public Land Survey used, which is why prairie-state farms map so cleanly.

Is floor area measured the same way as land?

Same math, usual units differ: rooms are quoted in square feet or square meters, while plots and farms use acres and hectares. All ten units sit on this one page.
