About this tool

The pound is defined by the kilogram

Since 1959 one pound avoirdupois equals exactly 0.45359237 kilograms. The ounce is one sixteenth of that, the stone fourteen pounds. Because everything hangs off one exact factor, converting 100 pounds returns the same number on every calculator in the world — this one included.

Weight and mass, briefly

Physics measures mass in kilograms and weight in newtons, but scales, packages, and produce all use "weight" for mass — and so does this converter, because that is the everyday question. The gram, kilogram, and tonne are the same whether gravity agrees or not.

Frequently asked questions

How many pounds is a kilogram?

About 2.2046. For quick estimates, double the kilograms and add a tenth — close enough for luggage and groceries.

Is a stone 14 pounds?

Yes — the UK body-weight stone is exactly 14 pounds, about 6.35 kilograms. It is not used for anything else in daily life.

What is the difference between an ounce and a fluid ounce?

An ounce measures weight; a fluid ounce measures volume. They only match up for water-like liquids, and fluid ounces live on the volume converter.
