Convert PDF to RTF Online Free — Rich Text Export

Runs 100% in your browser — your files never leave your device.

RTF is the format that opens everywhere Word does not: WordPad, TextEdit, older word processors, and plenty of specialty tools. This tool extracts a text-based PDF and packages it as an RTF document — entirely in your browser, no upload, no account. Unicode survives as proper RTF escapes, page boundaries are preserved, and scanned pages are flagged as needing OCR.

How it works

  1. 1

    Add a text-based PDF

The file stays on your device — extraction is entirely local.

  2. 2

    Convert to RTF

Text is packaged as portable rich text with unicode escapes and page breaks.

  3. 3

    Download the .rtf

Opens in WordPad, TextEdit, Word, LibreOffice and most legacy processors.

About this tool

Who still needs RTF

More workflows than you would expect. Legacy document systems in healthcare, government and logistics still import RTF as their safe interchange format. Windows’ built-in WordPad, macOS TextEdit and countless embedded editors open RTF without any Office installation. And because RTF is plain text with markup, it survives mail gateways and archival systems that choke on binary formats.

How the conversion handles your text

Each page becomes an RTF section separated by page breaks. Characters outside ASCII — accents, symbols, CJK — are emitted as standard RTF unicode escapes, so the file opens correctly regardless of the reader’s code page. Paragraph breaks are preserved as RTF paragraph marks. Like every output of this extraction pipeline, it is generated in your browser from the PDF text layer: scans have nothing to extract and complex layouts may need review.

Frequently asked questions

What opens an RTF file?
WordPad and TextEdit open it natively; Word, LibreOffice and Google Docs import it. It is one of the most widely supported document formats in existence.
Does RTF keep formatting from the PDF?
It keeps the text, paragraph breaks, page breaks and unicode characters. Fonts, images and exact layout remain in the PDF.
Is the conversion private?
Yes — it runs in your browser. No upload, no account, and the result is generated locally from your file.
Why does the file contain backslash codes?
That is RTF itself: a plain-text markup format. Word processors read those codes and render the formatted document.
