What the numbers mean
Conversational English lands between 120 and 160 words per minute. Presentations sit lower, 100 to 150, because you are choosing words rather than reacting. Podcast hosts often cruise at 150 to 180. Auctioneers and广告-readers aside, above 200 and comprehension starts dropping for everyone. The comparison that stings: average typing is about 40 words per minute, which is why speaking a first draft feels so much more productive.
Why your number will vary
The test measures you, not your ceiling. Reading aloud lands faster than free speech for most people — no word-finding pauses. Nervousness pushes some speakers faster and others into long silences. Topic familiarity matters enormously: explaining your own job will clock 30 words per minute above explaining a subject you met this morning. Take the test on two or three different days and average the results before drawing conclusions.
How the measurement works
Your recording is transcribed by the Whisper speech model running entirely inside your browser — the same engine the audio-to-text tool uses. The model downloads once (about 45 MB) and is cached; afterwards the test works offline. Words are counted from the transcript, elapsed time from your taps, and words per minute is simply the division. The transcript is also scanned for filler words, because speed without clarity is just noise — the filler word counter breaks that part down in detail.

- No. The speech model runs in your browser after a one-time download. Your recording is transcribed on your own device and never sent anywhere.
- Why does my WPM differ from other tests?
- Some tools estimate from syllables or elapsed time without transcription. This one counts real recognized words, so pauses, restarts, and mumbling all lower the number — which is the honest result.
- What is a good speaking speed?
- For presentations, 100–150 words per minute. For conversation, 120–160. The "right" speed is the one your audience follows without rewinding.
- How long should I talk?
- At least 30 seconds; a full minute or two gives a much more stable number, because short samples over-reward bursts of speed.
- Does it count filler words?
- Yes — the transcript is scanned for um, uh, like, you know and the rest, and the total shows alongside your speed. Speaking fast while filler-heavy is not actually fast communication.
