About this tool

What a healthy signal looks like

Speak at your normal volume from your normal distance. The level meter should climb past the halfway mark on loud syllables and drop close to zero when you stop. If the meter barely moves, you are too far away, the input gain is low, or the wrong device is selected. If it slams to 100% and stays there, your input is clipping — reduce the gain, because clipped audio cannot be fixed afterwards.

Reading the waveform

The waveform shows your raw signal over time. Smooth, dense waves mean a clean voice signal. Regular spiky patterns while you are silent usually mean keyboard or fan noise. A flat line while you talk means the browser is listening to a different device — pick another input from the list and watch the meter. The waveform is drawn from the raw samples your microphone delivers, so it shows exactly what a recorder would capture.

Why microphones fail browser checks

The usual suspects, in order: the operating system is sending the signal to a different input than the one you are checking; browser permission was denied earlier and remembered; a conferencing app is holding the microphone exclusively; or a USB interface changed its device name after a driver update. The device picker lets you test each input directly, which is faster than guessing in system settings.

Privacy: what this test does and does not do

The test opens your microphone and processes the signal locally, in your browser, using the standard audio APIs. There is no upload, no recording server, and no account. Why do I sound quiet even at full volume?
Input gain. Raise the microphone level in your system sound settings — browser pages receive the already-quiet signal. Getting closer to the mic helps more than software boosts, which add noise.
Does this work with USB and Bluetooth microphones?
Yes — anything the browser can see as an input. Bluetooth adds a moment of latency and often compresses the signal, so the waveform may look flatter than a wired mic.
Can I record with this tool?
